Antony aims to build on Newport County display following goal and assist

Manchester United winger Antony registered a goal and assist during Sunday’s 4-2 win over Newport County in the FA Cup.

Our £86millon signing from Ajax has struggled for form since his mega-money transfer in the summer of 2022. The criticism was getting worse because Antony had failed to score or assist this season – until the win over Newport County, where his abysmal run came to an end.

Antony came up with a first-half assist to allow Bruno Fernandes to score early on. Then, after Newport equalised to make it 2-2, the Brazil international hit the back of the net with a rebounded effort.

There’s no denying that off-field issues have had an impact on Antony, but hopefully he can kick on from Sunday’s display and end the season strongly.

James Ducker from The Telegraph has quoted Antony via X saying he hopes Sunday can help kick-start his season at United. He said: “I fought hard to reach the levels of playing for this club, I know I can build on yesterday’s performance and continue to show my qualities. I pushed myself day after day for better performances.

“I will continue to complete close myself off to improve and play the football that Manchester United hired me to do. The whole club, every fan, deserves the best from each one of us. United is one of the main clubs in the world, where everyone wants to be and it’s where I want to build my story.

“I know it hasn’t been an easy season, we didn’t get the results we wanted as a team, but we never stopped working and focusing on what needed to be done to improve.”
