Obiora Okonkwo while declaring his intention to contest the governorship election in Anambra
A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, Prof Obiora Okonkwo, has vowed to end Anambra’s status as a one-party state by defeating Governor Chukwuma Soludo in the November 5 election.
The Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines made this declaration on Tuesday at the APC national secretariat in Abuja after submitting his nomination and expression of interest forms.
According to him, allowing the All Progressives Grand Alliance to maintain its grip on Anambra by leveraging the legacy of the Biafra warlord and APGA founder, Odumegwu Ojukwu, would continue to deprive the state of the benefits of aligning with the central government.
He said, “Anambra cannot be left out. We have lost a lot by standing alone. We cannot continue to be a one-party state. The real beneficiaries have been APGA governors, not the people of Anambra State. Our party is managed by seasoned politicians who will not fall for APGA’s gimmicks.
“Our president, the leader of the party, is a highly strategic politician who is a true party man. He will not sabotage his party or its candidate. I can assure you that APC is serious, and Anambra is ready to connect to the centre.
“When Anambra aligns with the APC leadership, it will be easier to connect with the rest of the South East. We have already seen this process in action with the establishment of the South East Development Commission.”
Okonkwo also dismissed as “fraudulent” claims from the APGA camp that Soludo had reached an agreement with APC and President Bola Tinubu to back his re-election in exchange for Anambra’s votes in the 2027 presidential election.
