The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in the Sokoto State local government elections, winning all 23 chairmanship positions and accompanying councillorship roles.
The announcement was made on Monday by Alhaji Aliyu Suleiman, chairman of the Sokoto State Independent Electoral Commission.
The elections, held last Saturday, saw participation from 15 political parties; however, the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), notably opted out of the electoral process.
Following the declaration of results, the winning candidates were promptly issued certificates of return, marking their official recognition by the commission.
The newly elected chairmen are set to be sworn in by Governor Ahmed Aliyu today at 4 PM.
In a related development, the APC also triumphed in the Kwara State local government elections, defeating the PDP and other competing parties.
According to the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC), the council elections saw the APC outperforming rivals across all 16 council areas, marking the state’s return to local governance after a seven-year hiatus.
APC, PDP, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Accord Party and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) contested the council election across the 16 council areas in 193 wards.
The local government election was held in Kwara State seven years after the last one.
