APC sweeps C’River, Nasarawa LG polls

The ruling All Progressives Congress has won all the 18 chairmanship positions in the Cross River State local government election held on  Saturday, November 2.

Also, the party won all 13 chairmanship seats in the Nasarawa Local Government election held on Saturday.

The Chairman of the Cross River State Electoral Commission and the Returning Officer, Dr Ekong Boco, declared the results at the commission’s headquarters in Calabar, on Sunday.

The APC recorded a landslide victory in Abi, Odukpani, Bakassi, Akpabuyo,  Ogoja, Akamkpa, Bekwarra, Etung, Biase, Boki, Calabar Municipality,  Obubra, Yakurr, Yala, Obanliku, Obudu, Ikom, and Calabar South LGAs.

Also, certificates of return were issued to the winners, shortly after the declaration of results by Dr Boco.

Governor Bassey Otu congratulated the winners and described the elections as peaceful.

He expressed hope that the newly elected LG helmsmen would align with his people’s first agenda for the state.

“We have a well-defined vision for the state, and we believe the new leadership at the local government level would understand that they must align with the state government’s agenda and exhibit unwavering dedication to realising good governance,” he said.

Nine opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party, participated in the election, though they did not field candidates across the 196 local council wards in the 18 local government areas.

The Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission, announcing the results said out of the 147 electoral wards in the state, the APC won 140, while the Social Democratic Party and Zenith Labour Party won five and two seats respectively.

The Chairman of NASIEC, Ayuba Wandai Usman, made the declaration in Lafia on Sunday.

The APC chairmanship candidates won Lafia (217,573 votes), Doma (70,545 votes), Keana (35,094 votes), Awe (59,206 votes), Obi (93,486 votes), Keffi (74,419 votes), Kokona (53,057 votes), Akwanga (82,075 votes), Toto (43,792 votes), Karu (146,450 votes), Wamba (39,377 votes), Nasarawa (96,358 votes) and Nasarawa-Eggon (94,497 votes).

He said the exercise was entirely peaceful and thanked the residents for their unwavering resolve towards entrenching democracy at the grassroots level.

Our correspondent reports that the ZLP won two councillorship seats in Doma LGA while the SDP secured four councillorship seats in Nasarawa-Eggon and one councillorship seat in Keffi local government.
