Arsenal fans believe the club are making a costly ‘mistake’ amid reports that they are in talks with Leandro Trossard over a new contract.

Trossard has been in poor form for the Gunners – and at the age of 29 – he has arguably already passed his peak as he approaches his 30s.

But they are keen to keep Trossard and are even willing to give the Belgium international ‘a significant pay increase’, according to the Daily Mail.

Trossard, who currently earns £90,000-a-week, could soon pocket a fresh six-figure sum, believed to be in the region of around £120-150k-a-week.

The versatile attacker, who attracted interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia in the last transfer window, is currently under contract until June 2026.

Arsenal supporters have expressed their frustrations about news of a possible contract extension for Trossard all over social media.

‘About to be 30, never been good enough as a starter and never will be a starter, been horrendous all season,’ @lurking4everr posted on Reddit.

‘Yeah let’s extend and give him a huge pay bump too?? This club can never help it but make poor mistakes when it to comes to these extensions. We will be unable to ever sell him now.’

A second Arsenal fan, @jacobhenry789, added: ‘Have we not learnt anything from offering older players contracts? Give them a contract for what they can do in the future, not what they’ve done in the past.’

@MrCopperbottom said: ‘He’s been a great signing for us, but he’s never had elite athleticism and is now 29. I expect him to decline over the next couple of seasons and need to be phased out regardless. The end of his existing contract felt like a natural break-point to me.’

‘Feels like a mistake,’ @basedsims posted while another fan, @leon-theproffesional, said: ‘[He] doesn’t deserve it and we should upgrade.’

‘”Significant pay rise” is terrifying for a player we should be moving on,’ @PapiOnReddit added.

@tbbt11 posted: ‘I would be more aligned to this if the club had proven they can build attacking depth. Right now we’ve only seen it in defense so I’m hesitant to crown this as a genius move just yet.’
