Raphinha has become one of the faces of the FC Barcelona team under Hansi Flick this season, establishing himself as a top star and one of the coach’s most trusted lieutenants on the pitch and in the dressing room.
However, things could have turned out differently for the Brazilian international as there were a lot of speculations over his future during the summer transfer window.
Indeed, with the Blaugrana needing to make big sales, Raphinha’s name was constantly linked with a departure. Ultimately nothing materialised but it was not due to a lack of interest.
Arsenal made an unsuccessful attempt
As has already been reported, Raphinha turned down overtures from Saudi Arabia to remain at Barcelona in the summer even though he was offered lucrative contracts.
Now, the Mirror reports that Arsenal too wanted to sign the Brazilian international and even made an effort to secure the Barça ace.
Indeed, as per the report, Edu, who left the position of the Gunners’ sporting director recently, tried to rope in Raphinha and even held talks about a transfer in the summer.
The former Leeds United winger reportedly sought assurances over a regular spot in the team but eventually ended up deciding that he wanted to continue at Barcelona, putting a stop to Arsenal’s schemes.
Having stayed put and won over Flick at Barça, Raphinha has already outdone himself in terms of goals scored in his first two seasons at the club.
The 27-year-old is also a leader in the dressing room and has been named one of the five club captains for the season as well, and a new contract could also be on the horizon for the winger.
