Arsenal are ‘pushing’ to sign Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich on deadline day before the winter transfer window closes, according to reports.

The Gunners have been locked in a race for Tel’s signature along with fellow Premier League sides Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham.

It emerged on Sunday that United’s talks with Bayern had broken down with a potential switch to Old Trafford now thought to be off the cards.

Tel, meanwhile, has already snubbed Chelsea and rejected a £50m switch to Spurs, meaning that Arsenal may be in pole position to bring him to the Emirates today.

The Independent reports that Arsenal are ‘pushing’ to sign Tel after United’s setback while football transfers expert Florian Plettenberg says there’s still time for a deal with the Gunners remaining in talks with Bayern.

Bayern are open to either selling Tel or letting him go out on loan with an obligation to buy – but the German club are holding out for the right offer ahead of the Premier League window shutting at 11pm UK time tonight.

The Bundesliga giants are keen to avoid a panic sale and have not ruled out the possibility of the 19-year-old attacker staying at the Allianz Arena.

Tel has produced 16 goals and seven assists across 83 games for Bayern to date and is considered as one of the most exciting teenagers in Europe.

He has struggled for regular game time since Vincent Kompany become head coach, though, which has seen him become keen to leave the club.

Arsenal are hopeful of getting a deal done, given Tel idolised Gunners legend Thierry Henry growing up.

Tel joined Bayern from Rennes in 2022, paying the French club £24m to bring him over to Germany.

The versatile France U21 international mainly operates as left winger but is happy to play on the right side and can also also be deployed in the centre-forward position.

He has already drawn comparisons to French World Cup winner and Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe.
