Arsenal have terminated Alex Runarsson’s contract with the Iceland international goalkeeper set for a free transfer to FC Copenhagen.

The Gunners loaned Runarsson to Championship side Cardiff City in August and he was meant to spend the whole season with the Welsh club in the second tier.

But Arsenal have reportedly decided to break the loan and Runarsson is now set for a permanent move to Champions League team Copenhagen.

The Danish champions pulled off a stunning win over Manchester United in November and they are due to face Manchester City in the last 16.

Runarsson will replace Kamil Grabara at Copenhagen, who will soon depart Jacob Neestrup’s side to join Bundesliga club Wolfsburg.

Runarsson arrived at Arsenal in 2020 from French side Dijon and made a total of six appearances for the Gunners, with three of those resulting in clean sheets.

The 28-year-old has been capped 27 times by Iceland and was part of their squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

His spell at Cardiff was the third time Arsenal had sent Runarsson out on loan following stints at OH Leuven and Alanyaspor in Belgium and Turkey respectively.

Runarsson impressed in the 2017-18 season and was crowned Player of the Season at his former club FC Nordsjælland.

He has also previously played for KR Reykjavik in his home country, where he started his career.
