Aston Villa are keen on signing Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso.

According to a report from Calciomercato, Italian giants Juventus and AC Milan are keen on signing the 28-year-old Spanish defender as well but Aston Villa are in pole position to secure his services.

The West Midlands club are currently pushing for Champions League qualification and they could be an attractive destination for players at the end of the season. Hermoso has shown his quality in La Liga with Atletico Madrid and he would be a quality acquisition for Aston Villa.

The West Midlands outfit will need to add more quality and depth in central defence. The defender is at the peak of his powers and he could make an immediate impact next season. The Spaniard is versatile enough to operate as a central defender as well as a left-back.

Can Aston Villa convince Mario Hermoso?

It will be interesting to see if Aston Villa can finish in the top four this season and convince top players like Hermoso to join them.

With the likes of Juventus and AC Milan in the race, it will not be easy for the Premier League club. However, they have the financial resources to offer the player a lucrative contract and convince him to move to the Premier League instead.

The presence of a quality manager like Unai Emery at the helm could also play a key role in convincing the defender.

Aston Villa already have a quality central defender in Pau Torres and Hermoso could form a superb partnership with his compatriot at the heart of Aston Villa’s defence next season.
