Quickly reduced to ten and led at home by Bayer Leverkusen, Atlético de Madrid managed to overthrow their opponent on Tuesday evening, during the 7th day of the Champions League (2-1).

Crazy atmosphere at the Metropolitano this Tuesday evening. At the final whistle of this clash on the seventh day of the league phase of the Champions League between Atlético de Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, it was the Madrilenians who were able to raise their arms to the sky. An almost unthinkable victory (2-1) at the break. And yet…

Things started off badly for the Colchoneros, reduced to ten in the twenty-third minute of play with the direct red received by Pablo Barrios. They got worse just before the break, when Pedro Hincapie opened the scoring for the Germans (0-1, 45th+1). But while everything seemed to be working in favor of the visitors, the match gradually changed its appearance.

Bayer has cracked

Or at least the Atlético players showed that they had it under the hood. One man will demonstrate it almost single-handedly. Julian Alvarez first equalized shortly after returning from the locker room (1-1, 52nd). And then the tension rose a notch on the Bayer side, with a second yellow, synonymous with red for Hincapie (76th). Enough to further boost Antoine Griezmann's partners, with a double snatched at the end of the match by Alvarez (2-1, 90th). A second personal goal which gave victory to his team.

This result allows Atlético to move past its victim of the day to find itself in provisional third position. With fifteen and thirteen points respectively, the two teams are guaranteed to be at least play-offs before the last day of the league phase.
