For its first official match of the season, Atlético Madrid was held to a 2-2 draw by Villarreal on Monday evening in La Liga, despite a decisive Antoine Griezmann.

Atlético will have to settle for that. Traveling to Villarreal this Monday evening for the 1era La Liga matchday, the Colchoneros conceded a draw (2-2).

Everything was decided in the first half. Marcelino’s men took the lead thanks to Arnaut Danjuma (18e), but Marcos Llorente, well served by Antoine Griezmann, equalized in the process (20e). The unfortunate Koke gave the advantage back to the Yellow Submarine (37)e), who saw Alexander Sorloth (45e+5) reset the clocks just before the break.

A big first for Alvarez

Starting with Diego Simeone for this first match of the season, Antoine Griezmann played almost the entire match, with a decisive pass to his name. He was replaced in the 78th minutee

minute of play by the new Colchoneros recruit, Julian Alvarez.

Among the big names in this Spanish championship, only FC Barcelona won during this first round of the Spanish championship. The Catalans dominated Valencia (1-2), while Real Madrid shared the points with Mallorca for Kylian Mbappé’s first in La Liga.
