Audra McDonald should start making room for her 7th Tony Award because it sounds like she might be winning another one, based on the reviews for her performance in Gypsy. The legendary Broadway star, who holds the record for most acting Tony wins with six awards, celebrated the opening night of her new show on Thursday (December 19) at the Majestic Theatre in New York City. Audra looked incredible in a red gown on the red carpet while attending the after party with co-stars Danny Burstein, Joy Woods, Jordan Tyson, and Kevin Csolak, among others. Gypsy, suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, is Broadway’s ultimate tale of mothers and daughters, ambition and fame, and the lengths we’ll go in pursuit of the American dream. Previous actresses to lead Broadway productions include Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, and Patti LuPone. USA Today says the show is “a once-in-a-lifetime event! Top-to-bottom perfection.” Time Out New York notes “Audra McDonald is a revelation in a magnificent star turn.” Chicago Tribune said Audra is “the best actress to ever play this iconic role.” And the Washington Post wrote that this is “a once-in-a-lifetime performance that you’d be crazy to miss.” Check out photos of the star-studded crowd who attended the opening night show!
