Nightmarish evening for OM! Beaten 3-0 in Auxerre, sealed by refereeing and reduced to ten, the Marseillais cry scandal.
Marseille did not expect it. Not here, not against this Auxerre team who had not tasted victory for three months. And yet, in an abbilled abbot-deschamps, the Burgundians signed one of the exploits of this season, inflicting on OM its first defeat of the year 2025 (3-0). A setback which, beyond the field, risks fueling a fierce controversy.
An electric meeting and a frustrated OM
The pre-match had already laid the foundations for the conflict. The appointment of Jérémy Stinat to direct this meeting had provoked the ire of Marseille leaders, still bitter compared to his role in the suspension inflicted on Mehdi Benatia. After 90 minutes of a harsh duel, they are now no doubt: this OM was not scheduled to win tonight.
This does not detract from the performance of Auxerre, which has been able to take advantage of each opportunity. The first breach was opened in the 34th minute. Gaëtan Perrin, launched on the right side, erased his vis-à-vis a silky hook before rolling a sumptuous strike in the opposite skylight. An exceptional goal, his eighth of the season, which allowed the Auxerrois to lead to the break.
But it is in the second period that the meeting changed, in a succession of arbitral decisions that OM will not forget.
OM falls in Auxerre in a high tension match.
Between arbitral decisions and Marseille collapse
In the 45th minute, Quentin Merlin was unbalanced in the area. No whistle, no penalty. OM protested, in vain. In the 52nd minute, Amine Gouiri thought to equalize, but the Var detected a millimeter offside of Luis Henrique. A blow, but OM stayed alive. Until the most striking episode of the evening.
Derek Cornelius, already warned, received a questionable second yellow in the 64th minute. His intervention, certainly rough, earned him an expulsion which put Marseille in a dead end. Pablo Longoria, furious, went down from the stands to express his indignation. But the spell was tested.
In the 75th minute, Sinayoko escaped alone from his own camp, taking advantage of an OM in inferiority. Alone against Gerónimo Rulli, he was stopped irregularly in the surface. Jubal Junior did not tremble on a penalty spot. 2-0, Auxerre sealed his feat, and Marseille, her bitterness.
But the nightmare did not stop there for the Olympians. In additional time, on a final corner, Jubal struck again. Mounted to the second post, the Brazilian defender placed an unstoppable head to seal the Auxerroise demonstration. 3-0, total humiliation, black evening for OM.
A setback that will leave traces to OM
This first defeat in 2025 does not drop OM in the rankings – five points ahead of Lille assure him a comfortable margin. But she marks a stop and leaves behind her a feeling of injustice that risks fueling the debates.
Auxerre savor resounding success. Three won places, one leap in tenth place, and a breath of fresh air in the fight for maintenance. For Marseille, the time is for anger, and Jérémy Stinat has not finished hearing about this evening when everything seemed written in advance.
