Ava Max opened up about the impact that AI will have on the music industry in a new interview.

The 30-year-old “Kings & Queens” pop star explained that she was “terrified” to hear an AI-generated song that featured her voice even though she never recorded it.

She weighed in on the use of artificial intelligence in the industry and how she thought that it would impact pop stars as it continues to develop.

“Hearing my voice on a track I never touched made me realize how fast AI is advancing—and how unprotected artists and their teams are,” Ava told PopFiltr.

She continued, saying, “I think we can all agree that AI doesn’t have a soul.”

“It takes blood, sweat, tears, hours, long days, and sometimes even months to make a song. AI can generate 150 iterations in less than half a second, but where’s the creator behind that,” she added about its use in the creative process.

She used her song “Sweet but Psycho” as an example, noting that there were “ten different versions” of the song that were created with “a village, a team, and time.”

“With AI, where is the heart in the process,” she asked.

Ava added that she did not think that AI could underscore the prevalence of pop stars.

“While AI can mimic structures, genres, and trends, it can’t emulate the pain of loss or the joy of new life like the human heart does,” she explained, adding that the growing prevalence of AI might make “real human depth and experience” mean more to fans.

With the future being so unclear, Ava noted that “we don’t know yet” what will come from AI.

Regardless, her focus is on making sure that artists are treated fairly and compensated for their work.

“It’s likely that a large portion of new music royalties will come from AI-generated or AI-assisted music. The real question is, should AI-generated music receive the same royalties per stream as artist-made music,” she said. “It’s about fairness. Artists, myself included, work so hard on our songs, our creations, and it has a depth that AI can’t replicate.”

Ava just returned with a new song. Check out its personal message.
