Many beloved film series from the 1980s and ’90s have found new life in the form of legacy sequels, reboots, revivals, and “the characters are old now, let’s roll with it” continuations. But don’t expect the same from Back to the Future, at least according to screenwriter Bob Gale. At this past weekend’s Saturn Awards, he made his feelings very clear on the subject.

As reported by Collider, Gale, along with Back to the Future stars Lea Thompson and Christopher Lloyd, attended the annual event honoring sci-fi, horror, and fantasy in film, TV, books, and more. Back to the Future‘s 40th anniversary was honored with the George Pal Memorial Award honoring the franchise’s lasting contribution to the genre. Gale, who co-wrote all three Back to the Future movies with director Robert Zemeckis, was asked about the chance of a fourth movie.

“People always say when are you guys going to do Back to the Future 4?” he said. “And we say fuck you. And you can quote me on this.”

Collider’s firsthand account of the remark noted that the audience laughed—Gale’s not mad about Back to the Future‘s continuing popularity, obviously—and he also added that there has been more Back to the Future in the years since 1990’s part three. Namely, the recent musical: “We made three terrific movies and people kept asking for more Back to the Future so we made Back to the Future: The Musical … We’re taking it around the world.”

Last year, Zemeckis said that he wanted to make a movie version of the musical, so never say never to more Back to the Future in theaters. However, if you’re looking for a part four to continue the story… you might be out of luckk
