‘Bad Sisters’ Star Anne-Marie Duff Cast In BBC Thriller ‘Reunion’ About A Deaf Man Recently Out Of Prison

Bad Sisters star Anne-Marie Duff has boarded BBC thriller Reunion about a deaf man determined to right his wrongs while unravelling the truth behind the events that led him to prison.

The BAFTA-winner will play Christine opposite lead Matthew Gurney (Name Me Lawand), Eddie Marsan, Lara Peake (How to Have Sex) and Strictly Come Dancing winner Rose Ayling-Ellis, the latter of whom has landed a number of roles of late. Penned by up-and-coming deaf creative William Mager, the four-part series has started filming in and around Sheffield in northern England this week. It promises to be a milestone in inclusive storytelling, with the majority of the cast being deaf or using British Sign Language. There will also be a number of opportunities for deaf crew members.

In Reunion, recently released prisoner Daniel Brennan embodies the struggle of a man caught between two worlds, unable to fully integrate into the hearing world and shunned by his closest friends and the wider deaf community following a heinous crime. Amidst this isolation, his only meaningful relationship is with his estranged daughter Carly, who he has not had any contact with since his arrest over a decade ago.

“It is rare to witness a narrative where the audience is taken on a journey with a very different set of senses,” said Duff, who won a BAFTA in 2023 for Apple TV+’s Bad Sisters and has been nominated for four others. “It’s about our need to acknowledge each other’s truths – both inside our own families and beyond.”

The series is produced by The Virtues maker Warp Films, whose boss Mark Herbert said: “Reunion stands as a testament to our commitment at Warp Films for genuine representation and thrilling inclusive storytelling that resonates with all audiences whilst amplifying the voices and talents of an often-overlooked community both on and off screen”.

Reunion is directed by Luke Snellin (One Day, Wanderlust), with Helen Ostler (The Last Kingdom, Crime) as producer, and Siobhan Morgan (Waterloo Road, Hollyoaks) as associate producer. Herbert (Four Lions, The Virtues, This is England) and Gwen Gorst (Unforgotten, A Discovery of Witches) are executive producers for Warp, alongside series writer Mager, with Rebecca Ferguson and Jo McClellan for the BBC. BBC Studios will distribute the series internationally.

Reunion featured on a 12-strong BBC drama slate alongside the likes of a TV version of James Graham’s Dear England and Aimee Lou Wood’s debut writing project.
