Distanced by Vinicius in the race for the France Football 2024 Ballon d’Or, Kylian Mbappé can win the Gerd Müller Trophy ahead of Harry Kane in the event of a favorable settlement. Explanations.
At 25, Kylian Mbappé will not yet win the France Football Ballon d’Or. The top scorer in PSG’s history and captain of the French team (respectively semi-finalist of the Champions League with the Rouge et Bleu and semi-finalist of Euro 2024 with Didier Deschamps’ selection) is not even certain to appear on the podium like last year. He could be overtaken by his new Real Madrid teammates Vinicius and Jude Bellingham as well as by Rodri, champion of England and Europe.
Mbappé could, however, leave with the Gerd Müller Trophy during the ceremony on October 28 at the Théâtre du Châtelet, in the heart of Paris. This award for the top scorer of the 2023-2024 season, given to Robert Lewandowski then Erling Haaland, will go to the prodigy from Bondy or to Harry Kane, who scored 52 goals for club and country. Problem: if the trophy is given to a player playing in one of the five major championships, we do not know the tie-breaking criteria in the event of a tie between two players. This could, for example, be the number of penalties scored.
Mbappé ahead of Kane?
Last year, the number of France Football on the 2023 Ballon d’Or had not given the “ranking” of the Gerd Müller Trophy. In the 2022 magazine (when Karim Benzema was crowned), the scorers tied for the Gerd Müller Trophy had not been separated. Darwin Nuñez and Dusan Vlahovic had been ranked in 8th place and Wissam Ben Yedder, Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah had finished in 10th place all together. Perhaps there were no tie-breaking criteria at the time.
But France Football had however highlighted the number of matches played and minutes played of each player in the top 10 of the Gerd Müller Trophy. Mané was placed ahead of Salah while he had played more matches but fewer minutes. In this little game, Kylian Mbappé, who has played more matches than Harry Kane during the 2023-2024 season, could overtake the England captain thanks to a lower total minutes played (5001 against 5019).
