Pau Cubarsi is the latest in line of La Masia talents to make a mark with the Barcelona first team. The 17-year-old defender made his senior debut for the Catalans in January and has since seen his prominence only rise.

Since then, the teenage defender has gone on to make six senior appearances in all competitions, even registering an assist in the process.

The fact that Xavi has trusted him in difficult matches like the ones against Athletic Club, Real Betis, and Villarreal indicates how highly Cubarsi is rated at Barcelona.

Premier League clubs take notice

If a report from ESPN is to be believed, Cubarsi’s explosion at Barça over the past month has not gone unnoticed in the Premier League.

Indeed, clubs from England are already lining up a summer move for the 17-year-old, knowing that he has a measly €10 million release clause in his contract.

Cubarsi had signed a new contract with Barça in the summer of last year, penning a three-year deal with a small release clause amount of €10 million.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is understood to be an admirer of the 17-year-old as has been previously reported. And a handful of other Premier League clubs are also looking at the La Masia graduate.

Barcelona working on new contract

Given Cubarsi’s sudden explosion and growth in stature, Barcelona are already working on handing him a new and improved contract.

The report states that the Catalans were already in talks over an improved contract with the youngster’s camp.

But his recent performances with the first team have “changed the starting point” in negotiations as the two parties look to reach an agreement over a new long-term contract.

Cubarsi has made a big impression on the Barcelona locker room with his solid performances and the maturity he has displayed. And with clubs from England sniffing around, the Catalans will hope to finalise a contract renewal with the teenager at the earliest.
