Barcelona suffered yet another injury blow as Andreas Christensen has been ruled out of the Real Betis clash owing to a knock he picked up in midweek.
The Dane was left out of the squad after he missed training with the group. Although his injury does not appear to be serious, Barcelona would have to do without his services in tonight’s crucial game against Real Betis.
Christensen joins Inigo Martinez on the sidelines, thus limiting Xavi Hernandez’s options in the central defensive position.
Pau Cubarsi may start vs Real Betis
Given Barcelona’s injury woes in the central defensive unit, coupled with the absence of key right-back Joao Cancelo, Xavi may end up handing academy product Pau Cubarsi his first senior start.
The youngster is regarded as one of the best defensive talents in the Barcelona academy. He even made his senior debut in midweek, replacing none other than the injured Christensen.
According to Diario SPORT, Xavi may fancy starting with Cubarsi in this Real Betis encounter, as he looks to replace Christensen.
Should Cubarsi start, he will likely partner with Ronald Araujo in central defence. The Uruguayan international is back after facing a suspension in midweek.
Jules Kounde, meanwhile, may operate in the right-back spot, in the absence of the injured Cancelo.
A start against Betis could serve as a huge opportunity for the young Cubarsi to make a solid first impression.
The defender did well on his senior debut against Unionistas in midweek, but putting up a strong display against top-flight Betis could go a long way in enhancing his reputation.
As Barcelona contemplate selling a big-name defender in the coming summer, a few strong performances from Cubarsi could help him gain the trust of Xavi and even become a first-team option for Barça next season.
