Barcelona and Athletic Club still in the dark over Nico Williams’ future

Just a while ago, reports emerged claiming that Barcelona priority target Nico Williams had decided to stay put with Athletic Club for one more season.

The 22-year-old winger is the top target for the Blaugrana while PSG too are interested in signing him.

But it was suggested that Nico’s agent, Felix Tainta, had already informed PSG that he would be staying with the Basque outfit for one more season.

Barcelona, Athletic Club still unclear

However, now Gerard Romero has come forward with an update on the matter, stating that Nico Williams has still not communicated his decision to any party.

Having returned to Bilbao after his vacation this past weekend, the Spanish international has not informed Athletic Club or Barcelona about his next move and both clubs are still in the dark about the matter.

It is expected that the UEFA Euro 2024 winner will be communicating his decision sometime this week.

Nico is scheduled to return to training with Athletic Club on August 12 after his extended break post the Euros and it is believed that he will announce his decision on his future before that date.

While the situation remains open, it does seem like the winger might be leaning towards continuing at Athletic Club for another year.

Barcelona, for their part, are not ready to throw in the towel yet and having sent a contract offer, are waiting for his green light to activate his €58 million release clause.

With Nico now back in Bilbao, one can expect the winger to finally take a call on his future and inform the interested parties about the same soon.

It must, however, be noted that the Blaugrana have upped the ante in their pursuit of Dani Olmo of late, although they are encountering problems in negotiations with RB Leipzig over that move as well.
