Barcelona’s financial struggles have once again come to light as reports suggest they will be unable to compete for Viktor Gyokeres, one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers, reports SPORT

Sporting Lisbon, Gyokeres’ current club, have reportedly set a steep asking price of €100 million, which the Blaugrana cannot afford in the current transfer window—or even in the summer.

Gyokeres has been making waves across Europe with his extraordinary form. The forward has showcased consistent goalscoring prowess, making him one of the most talked-about players in the football world.

Sporting Lisbon are keen to hold onto their star striker, but they are aware that interest in him is growing. His €100 million release clause reflects the club’s determination to retain him, as they see the figure as fair given his outstanding performances.

There is plenty of interest

The striker’s form this year has been nothing short of remarkable. With 58 goals in 54 matches so far in 2024, Gyokeres has cemented himself among Europe’s elite scorers.

His hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League has only amplified interest in him, particularly from Premier League sides like Manchester United.

The Red Devils, under the guidance of his former coach Ruben Amorim, are seen as one of the leading contenders for his signature.

Sporting Lisbon, however, are preparing for all scenarios. Reports indicate that the Portuguese club is already scouting potential replacements for their star player in case he departs during the January transfer window.

With four crucial Champions League matches still to play before the window closes, Gyokeres has the chance to further solidify his value.

While Barcelona admire the striker and have him on their radar, their financial constraints mean they are unlikely to enter the race for his signature.

For now, the Catalan giants must sit back as other financially capable clubs compete for one of Europe’s most prolific forwards.
