With Hansi Flick’s imminent appointment as Barcelona manager, Cules can expect to see a renewed team with principles that may contrast with Xavi Hernandez’s outlook.

And it appears one of the major changes under Flick could be Barcelona captain Sergi Roberto potentially leaving the club.

Roberto’s renewal has slowed down

Despite being close to striking a contract extension with Roberto when Xavi was in charge, Barça are now slowing down the player’s extension, which was agreed weeks ago.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the impending arrival of Hansi Flick and the ongoing planning process, including considerations of the salary limit, could have influenced the delay.

Both sides acknowledge that the situation is deadlocked. The Catalan giants committed to sending the necessary paperwork as soon as possible to finalize the deal weeks ago.

However, Roberto’s agent, Josep Maria Orobitg, and sporting director Deco had their last productive meeting in early May. Since then, there has been no more development.

Under Xavi, the renewal of the Barcelona captain appeared to be set in stone, considering his value behind closed doors and his versatility, which appealed to the coaching staff.

Now, the situation appears to be taking a U-turn, with Roberto losing one of his biggest advocates and admirers. Even so, the veteran has set aside proposals from several clubs, both within La Liga and from other leagues.

Roberto’s intention is to continue plying his trade for the Blaugranes and is awaiting a resolution. He remains confident in the club’s commitment to him.

Given that the 32-year-old is one of the lowest-paid players in the squad, Barcelona may guarantee continuity for an additional season unless Flick puts a halt to the negotiations and has other plans.
