In a major development, journalist Alex Pintanel is reporting that Barcelona have decided against renewing the contract of club captain Sergi Roberto. It means that the 31-year-old will leave the Catalans as a free agent in the summer.
Roberto, a graduate of the La Masia academy, has been a one-club man throughout his career since making his senior debut for Barça way back in 2010 under then-manager Pep Guardiola.
While never a regular starter, the Spaniard has been a handy utility player throughout his career even though injuries bogged him down.
Roberto’s current contract with Barcelona stands to expire at the end of the ongoing season. The versatile right-back was in a similar situation last year as well, but with Xavi batting for his renewal, he received a new contract until 2024.
Roberto was even named first captain this season following the departures of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
However, his journey with the Blaugrana is set to come to an end soon with the club deciding against offering him a new contract. Deco will inform those around the player of the decision imminently.
With Xavi set to leave at the end of the season, it was always expected that Roberto would not be offered a new contract.
The 31-year-old has played 14 times in all competitions this season, even scoring three goals in the process. Currently out with an Achilles tendon issue, the Barcelona captain is expected to return against Granada this weekend.
However, as things stand, the coming four months will likely be his last in Barcelona colours.
