Despite barely featuring for Barcelona on the field, Sergi Roberto is a wonderful captain for the team.
The La Masia graduate is an inspiring role model for up-and-coming youngsters and sidelined players to place the club first and make the most of their limited opportunities.
Further, his ability to communicate in multiple languages helps unite the dressing room and ensure that all players feel included.
The veteran’s contract with Barcelona runs out this summer, and the administration has been on the edge over his renewal.
After all, the club’s financial situation is far from healthy and every small sale will help alleviate the situation.
Decision reached
As revealed by Alex Pintanel in a recent report, Barcelona have changed their mind and will offer him a contract renewal. The club have not met with Roberto’s representatives yet, but developments are expected in the coming days.
Their change in stance is largely related to Roberto’s great form in recent games since his return to the team dynamics.
The 32-year-old made his first appearance for Barcelona in close to two months in the team’s recent win over Napoli. Coming off the bench, he changed the complexion of the game and contributed with a vital assist.
He then went on to start both of Barcelona’s next two games and impressed on both occasions. Needless to say, the board see him as a valuable piece worth retaining for next season.
Far from a simple decision
The Spanish journalist goes on to add that Roberto is considering the offer from his boyhood club but that the negotiations will be long and complicated.
For starters, Roberto has offers from outside of Europe that offer him better economic returns than Barcelona proposes. The MLS, in particular, is said to be a well-placed destination.
Further, Barcelona’s proposal will include another wage cut over and above the massive slash in salary he took during his last renewal. Considering that he is already one of the team’s least-paid players, it remains to be seen if an agreement can be struck.
