Earlier in the summer, Inigo Martinez was one of many Barcelona players who were facing an uncertain future at the club.

The veteran centre-back was not even registered as part of the Barcelona first-team and was closely linked with an exit.

Despite all this, Inigo Martinez did not back down and continued to train under the leadership of new coach Hansi Flick.

The German tactician, for his part, kept his faith in the Spaniard and that trust is now paying dividends for Barcelona, as the player has emerged as one of the club’s best-performing defenders.

The Barcelona coach likes the fact that the former Athletic Club defender always puts his 100% in training and is committed to the Barça project.

Apart from his commitment to training, Inigo Martinez offers a lot to the dressing room, with his experience and leadership.

Even in terms of performances, Martinez’s calm and composed presence at the back, coupled with his vast experience, has made life easier for Pau Cubarsi.

The young Barcelona centre-back has been more expressive on the ball, thanks to Inigo Martinez’s excellent coverage and support in the defensive third.

This has led to an overall harmony in the team and everything suggests Martinez will continue to remain a defensive lynchpin in the months to come, which is interesting considering the fact that Barcelona are set to have Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen in the near future.

It will be interesting to see if Martinez can retain his place in the team once either of these two central defenders returns to full fitness.

But for now, Martinez’s presence in the Barcelona backline will be critical as the Catalans look to maintain their stellar form in the league.
