Marc Bernal and Marc Casado were two of the most impressive youth players during Barcelona’s pre-season campaign this summer.

Both central midfielders impressed new coach Hansi Flick, who was more than confident about including them in his first-team plans for the new season.

The greatest sign of Flick’s faith in the duo came in the opening game, where the German tactician opted to start both players in midfield against Valencia.

‘Marc-ing’ the territory

However, as Barcelona gear up for an important game against Athletic Club, Flick appears to have made his choice between the two.

Announcing his starting XI against Athletic Club, Flick has opted to start Bernal in midfield, alongside Pedri. He has kept Casado on the bench, opting for a more attacking midfield setup.

Flick’s decision appears to suggest he has put Bernal ahead of Casado in the pecking order, which is hardly surprising as the former was indeed the more impressive player during the pre-season.

Although Casado is a bit more experienced individual than his competitor, Bernal has gained Flick’s favour due to his ability to control the game, which is coupled with his consistency.

Many in the Barcelona camp firmly believe Bernal can emulate Sergio Busquets in the future and Flick’s decision to hand him a start in an important game against Athletic Club suggests he is ready to put his faith in the 17-year-old.

However, it remains to be seen whether or not Bernal can take full use of his advantage, especially against a stronger midfield unit of Athletic Club.
