In a huge development, the Liverpool ECHOfrom England reports that FC Barcelona would be the frontrunners to sign Luis Diaz if he opts to leave Liverpool in the summer transfer window.
Barça are in the market for a new left winger heading into the next season and have identified several potential targets for the same.
While Nico Williams of Athletic Club has been touted as a priority target, Liverpool’s Diaz is also seen as an option by the Blaugrana.
In fact, Barcelona’s sporting director Deco sees the Colombian international as a dream target and would consider a move for him if finances permitted.
Barcelona frontrunners if deal materialises
Now, the ECHO claims that Barcelona would be in the frontrunners’ seat for Diaz’s signing if his exit were to materialise in the summer.
It must be remembered that the Colombian speedster’s father had previously spoken of the player’s desire to turn out for the Catalans.
And with the club also showing some degree of interest, it only makes sense for Diaz to lean towards joining the La Liga heavyweights if he were indeed to leave Liverpool in the summer.
Finances a big question
While there may affinity from both parties to make the deal happen, Barcelona’s financial situation poses a huge question mark on the operation.
Diaz has a contract with Liverpool until 2027 and has a market value of €75 million, and as such, he will cost a significant sum to sign.
Barça, though, are not in a position to splurge such sums, especially with the Catalans also looking to sign a top-level pivot in the summer.
