As Barcelona look to gear up for a major squad overhaul in the coming summer, one of the club’s main objectives will be to get rid of unwanted stars in an effort to free up space in the wage bill.

Clement Lenglet is among these unwanted stars ready to be offloaded by Barcelona in the coming summer, once the defender returns from his loan spell at Aston Villa.

Barcelona have a Lenglet problem

However, offloading Lenglet this coming summer will be far from straightforward, as far as Barcelona are concerned.

The Frenchman, after all, has lost his place in the Aston Villa squad. Despite all his quality and experience, he has featured in 13 league matches this term.

This doesn’t bode well for Barcelona, knowing Lenglet’s struggles at Aston Villa could significantly impact his valuation. Moreover, Aston Villa, for their part, are unlikely to look for a permanent deal for the Frenchman at the end of the season.

Barça not ruling out contract termination

This could ultimately make it very difficult for Barcelona to secure an exit for Clement Lenglet, who still has a long-term contract and has one of the highest packages at Camp Nou.

It would not be sustainable for Barcelona to continue with Lenglet next season, which is why sources tell Barça Universal that the club have not completely ruled out the idea of terminating the Frenchman’s contract.

Although contract termination of Lenglet’s deal will come at a cost, it appears Barcelona are ready to bear the brunt of it, simply in order to avoid a larger payout.

For the time being, though, Barcelona will be Lenglet does attract potential suitors in the coming summer. One would expect the Catalans to even take a loss in order to offload the Frenchman.
