Barcelona are seriously considering terminating the contract of defender Clement Lenglet, as confirmed by journalist Luis Miguelsanz through SPORT

Lenglet, who renewed his contract until 2026 and deferred payments during the pandemic, has become one of the club’s highest earners.

Now, his high salary has become a significant issue for Barcelona’s salary cap, and no suitable offers have been found to transfer him. Therefore, the club is exploring alternatives, including contract termination.

It must be noted that Lenglet has returned to Barcelona and is now training with the team, but he is not part of the club’s long-term plans. Despite this, the club appreciates his professionalism and willingness to leave on loan when necessary.

Currently, all parties are searching for a permanent solution, and developments are expected in the coming weeks.

Saudi move ruled out

Barcelona initially tried to convince Lenglet to move to Saudi Arabia, where he would have received a modest transfer fee, and the club would have freed up his salary.

However, Lenglet is not interested in this type of move. Some European clubs have shown interest, but they can only cover 20% of his salary, leading to no agreements.

Furthermore, Napoli appear to be a potential destination, but they do not currently prioritize him. Sevilla are open to a loan deal, and several French clubs are also interested.

A solution is imminent

Barcelona have offered Lenglet a free transfer multiple times, but with two years left on his contract, he is not willing to forgo it. Both parties have agreed to take some time to find a suitable team, and Lenglet is set to play during the club’s tour of the United States.

If no solution is found by the end of August, the option of contract termination will become more likely.

Barcelona have already calculated the financial impact of this move. While it would be a significant budgetary hit for the current year, it would free up salary space, facilitating the potential signings of players like Nico Williams and Dani Olmo

Hence, terminating Lenglet’s contract might be a path the club is willing to take.
