With Barcelona entering the final few months of the season, preparations for the next campaign are already underway at the club’s headquarters.
Understandably, the board is intent on ensuring the mistakes of this season do not come back to haunt them again, with the Catalan giants going through a difficult patch.
Xavi’s departure is already confirmed after the coach publicly announced his decision to step down at the end of the season, but reforms in the coaching staff are not the only thing fans can expect.
Barcelona are anticipated to undertake a comprehensive restructuring effort, and rearranging the team’s personnel appears highly plausible.
Romeu’s continuity in jeopardy
Indeed, according to SPORT, one of the players anticipated to get the axe is none other than Oriol Romeu.
As per the information, it is complicated that the 32-year-old will remain at the club for next season.
The player committed for three seasons last summer, signing a contract until June 30, 2026.
However, having been bought as Sergio Busquets’ replacement, the defensive midfielder has failed to cope with the heightened pressure and demands at Barcelona.
Despite a positive start to life in Catalonia, he quickly faced a demotion in the ranks. As of now, he is struggling to find regularity in game-time and appears to have even fallen behind Andreas Christensen in the pecking order.
It is due to his waning form and age that Barça expects to part ways with Romeu. And reports suggest that Barcelona aim to sign a high-quality player in his position, which will only make the veteran star’s exit all the more plausible.
With two years still remaining on his contract, Barcelona can expect to recover the €3.5 million they paid for the Spanish midfielder. There is also the possibility of him being offered to Girona as part of the deal to sign Aleix Garcia.
