Over the past few months, Barcelona have combed through multiple managerial options in their bid to find the ideal replacement for Xavi Hernandez this summer.

One of the club’s prominent options was Hansi Flick. The German is currently a free agent and is looking for a new adventure after spells at Bayern Munich and the German national football team.

Barcelona were offered Hansi Flick

In a recent report, The Athletic has highlighted that Hansi Flick was offered to Barcelona this summer through Pini Zahavi.

Zahavi had notably played a crucial role in helping Barcelona secure the signing of Robert Lewandowski about two years ago.

Zahavi saw Flick as a potential replacement for Xavi. The German’s excellent relationship with the likes of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Ilkay Gundogan and indeed, Lewandowski, was just a cherry on top.

However, Barcelona decided against hiring Flick and have continued their hunt for a new manager who can replace Xavi.

Why Barcelona rejected Flick

The report adds that Barcelona’s main reasoning behind rejecting Flick was the German’s lack of fluency in either Spanish or English.

Flick’s linguistic limitations could be a hindrance to his adaption to life in Barcelona, which does require a coach to be proactive with his fans and players.

That was Barcelona’s argument and as such, the club have decided not to consider Flick for a managerial position next season.

The Catalans, in fact, appear to be riding on Xavi’s whims and ideally want the Spaniard to reverse his decision to leave Camp Nou at the end of the season.

The idea has gained traction, especially after Barça’s recent resurgence, though not everyone in the board is favouring Xavi’s prolonged stay at Camp Nou.
