Concurrent injuries to Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen spelt trouble for Barcelona ahead of the 2024-25 campaign in a position that the club appeared to be well-stacked in.

With Jules Kounde taking over as a right-back and Eric Garcia as a backup pivot, however, Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez were the manager’s best-placed options to start.

Just when it seemed like the team was going to lack a leader at the back, the Basque star stepped up and began leading with his experience.

Today, he is an undisputed starter for Hansi Flick and the heart of the team’s defence as revealed by SPORT.

A second youth

As well-put by the outlet, Martinez is enjoying a ‘second youth’ in his second season in Catalonia with renewed importance and a sense of responsibility.

After serving last season largely as a fringe player, the player has earned a very good place in Hansi Flick’s plans as he ticks all the boxes demanded by the new coach – he is aggressive, experienced, reliable on the ball and endowed with match-intelligence.

Injuries played a critical role in limiting his participation in recent years but he appears to have overcome his plantar fasciitis and muscle setbacks and is now more fit than ever before.

At this point, it is accepted that the veteran star is Barcelona’s leader at the back and he has taken up the responsibility with pride.

Martinez does not hesitate to advise his teammates in need and regularly instructs youngsters, especially in defence.

Outside the field, the former Athletic Club star is one of the most respected players in the dressing room and has earned his authority through professionalism and dedication.

Naturally, the 33-year-old veteran has established himself as one of Flick’s most trusted lieutenants on the field.
