From starring in the first-leg win, Ronald Araujo became Barcelona’s biggest culprit overnight as the Catalans slumped to a 4-1 loss at the hands of PSG. The result allowed PSG to advance to the semifinals, with a 6-4 aggregate win.

For many Barcelona fans and football pundits, it was Araujo’s red card which served as the turning point of the game, decimating the Barcelona side to ten men and allowing PSG to run rings around the defence.

Araujo’s performance was not taken well by fans, who were disappointed with his foul during the half-hour mark. Even teammate Ilkay Gundogan launched a scathing criticism on Araujo after the game.

“The football that gave me so much joy now hits me hard. I thank all those who are unconditionally by my side, my teammates who left everything on the field, and the fans who believed in this team until the end. I am very sorry not to give you this joy,” Araujo posted on Instagram.

The Uruguayan international displayed his optimism about the future, adding, “We will try again. Força Barça!”

Araujo is not the only Barcelona player heartbroken after the loss to PSG. Shortly after the final whistle last night, teenage duo Pau Cubarsi and Lamine Yamal couldn’t hold back tears either.

Barcelona’s defeat to PSG may have serious economic ramifications, with the Catalans notably missing out on an additional €12.5 million in prize money.
