After a slow start to the season, Sergi Roberto has had a revival of sorts in the Barcelona setup this calendar year.

The veteran midfielder has been quite useful with his versatility and leadership, playing a crucial role, especially in light of Frenkie de Jong and Pedri’s injuries.

Roberto’s services appear to have impressed the club’s hierarchy as well, with Barcelona now keen on extending his contract for another year.

Deco’s message Sergi Roberto

According to Catalunya Radio, Barcelona sporting director Deco has informed Roberto that the club want to renew his contract.

Roberto’s current deal at Camp Nou expires at the end of the season. Even at 32, though, the club are keen on retaining his services, as his leadership and experience make him a vital cog in the Barcelona setup.

As such, Deco has approached Roberto with the prospect of a renewal. The player, for his part, is keen on continuing at Camp Nou as well, though he may have to settle for a much lower salary.

Roberto must make economic sacrifices

Indeed, the report suggests Barcelona’s latest offer to Sergi Roberto is much lower than anything he has settled for in the past.

And that is saying a lot, given the fact that Roberto had to settle for multiple salary cuts in the past. But with Barcelona still suffering from an economic downturn, the club have no choice but to reduce his salary further.

Roberto has no shortage of options, though. Given his experience and talent, the Spaniard can easily move elsewhere.

He did reject advances from Saudi Arabia, but the midfielder might consider a move to the United States, where former Barcelona stars such as Sergio Busquets, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez are having a good time.
