The January transfer window was largely uneventful at FC Barcelona with no major signings or departures taking place.

However, there was a point in time when a certain Eric Garcia was being linked heavily with a departure, with the Catalans hoping to create room to sign Marcus Rashford on loan.

The 24-year-old ended up staying though after Hansi Flick decided to keep hold of him at least until the end of the season.

Garcia was close to Como transfer

Providing an update on the matter, Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Eric Garcia was close to signing for Serie A newbies Como 1907, with a deal being almost done.

Indeed, a transfer worth €7 million fixed fee plus add-ons was almost finalised before the operation was called off due to Flick’s intervention.

The Barça head coach decided to block the transfer as he considers Garcia an important player in his plans.

Since his exit was called off, the former Manchester City starlet has been growing in stature, putting in some impressive displays in his natural position at the heart of the defence.

Garcia has impressed with his ball-playing and understanding of the high-line tactics employed by Flick.

In addition to that, the Spanish international has also chipped in with important goals, highlighting his eye for goal as a key aspect of his game.

Garcia’s contract with Barcelona runs until the summer of 2026. The defender continues to battle with the likes of Pau Cubarsi, Ronald Araujo, Inigo Martinez, and Andreas Christensen for a spot in the team.

So, it remains to be seen whether he opts to continue at the club next season or seeks an exit in the summer. For now, though, he continues to be an important player for Flick.
