Barcelona delay announcing emergency Ter Stegen replacement signing until tomorrow

On Monday, Wojciech Szczesny arrived in Catalonia to complete his signing for FC Barcelona as an emergency replacement for injured goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

It was expected that the club would announce his signing at some point yesterday, but there was no official confirmation of the deal.

Update on the Szczesny deal

Now, according to journalist Tomasz Wlodarczyk, Szczesny completed his medical with Barcelona successfully on Monday.

However, his official contract signing and the announcement of the transfer will take place tomorrow, Wednesday.

Even though an official announcement will not arrive today, it is expected that Szczesny will be in attendance at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys in Montjuic tonight when Barcelona take on Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League.

Szczesny had announced his retirement from football last month after terminating his contract at Juventus despite having a year left on the deal.

But following Ter Stegen’s serious knee injury, Barça made an approach for the 34-year-old Polish shot-stopper and he agreed to come out of retirement and a contract was finalised last week.

As mentioned earlier, Szczesny arrived in Barcelona on Monday and completed his medicals an other formalities. But an official announcement of his signing will have to wait until tomorrow.

The 34-year-old ex-Arsenal and Juventus star is expected to don the No. 25 shirt at Barcelona as it is the only available number for a goalkeeper in the current squad with Ter Stegen taking #1 and Inaki Pena holding #13.
