In the weeks leading up to the summer transfer window, there were plenty of speculations surrounding the future of Barcelona defender and captain Ronald Araujo.

The 25-year-old was a transfer target for Bayern Munich and Manchester United, both of whom were offering him lucrative contracts.

Barcelona, for their part, have also been trying to hand the Uruguayan international a new and improved deal for some time now but their proposal has not convinced Araujo, giving way to the possibility of a departure, despite him being currently injured.

Araujo not going anywhere

However, now, according to journalist Nicolas Saavedra, Araujo will not be leaving Barcelona this summer despite the speculations.

The Uruguayan international is currently fully focused on recovering from the injury that he sustained during the Copa America and is not contemplating the possibility of a departure from Catalonia.

Having undergone surgery, the centre-back is expected to be sidelined for around four months, which gave way to speculations that Barcelona might not register him in La Liga until January.

It was another reason why the defender was said to be mulling over leaving the club in the summer. However, recent reports suggest that Barça will not de-register him.

Contract situation a concern

Araujo’s current contract with Barcelona expires in 2026 and the club have been trying to renew his deal for a while now, offering him improved terms that reflect his standing within the team as a mainstay and one of the captains.

However, the Blaugrana’s proposal has not been up to Araujo’s liking and as such his agents have not responded to the renewal offer.

Given the situation, Barcelona sporting director Deco, too, was not ruling out the possibility of a summer sale, especially considering the Catalans’ need for a big departure this summer. But.

However, Araujo’s injury changed all plans and the club are working on securing his renewal now while the defender will fully focus on his rehabilitation and recovery.
