Two weeks into the new season, perhaps the biggest enigma at Barcelona right now is the fitness of Frenkie de Jong.

The Dutchman, who picked up an injury at the end of last season, was hopeful of taking part in Euro 2024. But he was quickly ruled out. He was then expected to be back in action by the start of the new season.

However, de Jong is still yet to recover himself, though he has ruled out any fresh injuries. This has led to many uncertainties and question marks over his fitness.

De Jong advised to undergo surgery

A recent report from SPORT has offered an update on the fitness of de Jong, suggesting that the midfielder is still suffering from an ankle problem and has been advised to undergo surgery.

The situation, in fact, is very worrying as any blow or incident to the ankle could cause him to relapse and spend an extended period on the sidelines.

The delicate nature of de Jong’s fitness has now led to suggestions that he should undergo surgery in order to alleviate his ankle woes.

Although de Jong is working hard to strengthen the affected area, the condition appears to be irreversible without surgery.

Another long-term absentee?

As things stand, Barcelona are nowhere near close to having de Jong back in action. The midfielder will be out of action at least for a month, even though there are hopes he could regain fitness in two weeks.

The report suggests de Jong will look to return to the pitch at the end of September, but even that has come under doubt in light of recent revelations.

De Jong’s woes with his fitness have put Barcelona in a difficult spot, especially following Marc Bernal’s long-term injury.

But with no room to make any late signings, Hansi Flick & co. must find ways to address the problems with the help of in-house talents.
