One of the major disappointments for Barcelona this season has been Oriol Romeu’s performances at the base of midfield.
Considering that he was supposed to fill in the boots of Sergio Busquets, his underwhelming displays eventually compelled Xavi to relegate him to the bench.
Even when chances were given to Romeu to rediscover his solid form from earlier in the season, the Spanish midfielder could not make the most of those opportunities, only justifying his place away from the starting lineup.
As such, the Catalans have been left questioning his suitability for such a crucial role in the team, with a departure being strongly considered in the summer transfer window.
Besiktas have come calling
Now, SPORT have come out to report that Turkish club Besiktas have shown interest in Oriol Romeu as they aim to bolster their defensive midfield department.
This is not the first time Besiktas has shown interest in the 32-year-old, as the Turkish side were inches away from signing him in January after an agreement was allegedly reached.
However, the player’s entourage opted not to move to Besiktas, with the player’s wife harboring concerns following a terrorist attack. As such, the deal collapsed at the last minute.
Romeu prefers to stay in Spain
Indeed, the report adds that despite Besiktas’ interest, the former Girona midfielder prefers to stay in Spain.
Nonetheless, Barcelona continues to look for a way out for him. Having signed Romeu on a three-year contract, the Catalan giants will be looking to grab a fee for him.
Reports have previously argued that Girona would be interested in re-signing Oriol Romeu in the summer transfer window, which is a move that would potentially suit all parties involved, especially if Barça target Aleix Garcia is involved in the deal.
Time will tell where Romeu’s future lies, but it is apparent that Barcelona are keen on fortifying the defensive midfield position, and the Spaniard is considered a disposable asset.
