Barcelona forward Ferran Torres hasn’t played for the team since late January. The 24-year-old was subbed off in the seventh minute during Barcelona’s 1-0 win over Osasuna and while a lot has been said about his return, nothing is fixed yet.
Now, if a report from SPORT is to be believed, the former Manchester City forward is aiming to return against Atletico Madrid this coming Sunday, March 17, when Barcelona visit the Metropolitano Stadium.
Ferran still has time to recover
Ferran, who was expected to be fit for the Napoli and Mallorca match, faces two remaining training sessions to fully conquer his injury setback.
It is understood that since he is dealing with a rare muscle sprain, ensuring his complete recovery is important given his unfamiliarity with such injuries.
Right now, without medical clearance, his inclusion in this Friday’s Spanish team lineup appears unlikely.
Nonetheless, he stands as a strong contender for a spot in the 2024 European Championship in Germany.
Before that, though, seeing action against Atletico Madrid, a team he historically performs well against, having remained unbeaten in six encounters with Diego Simeone’s side, is possibly on the cards.
Ferran’s history with Atletico Madrid
His contributions against Atletico while with Barcelona have been notable, boasting four victories, including pivotal roles in recent triumphs both at the Metropolitano (0-1) and the Camp Nou (1-0).
In the ongoing campaign, his involvement was instrumental in securing three points in the 1-0 win earlier in the season, with Joao Felix finding the net, although he only played for 13 minutes.
Ferran’s return is eagerly anticipated by Xavi as the manager recognized his versatility across the frontline.
The 24-year-old forward’s ability to operate on either wing or as a central striker provides valuable tactical flexibility and this would come in handy for the team at a time when he is needed the most.
