Joao Felix is battling with FC Barcelona to make a comeback into the league title race and to progress deep into the UEFA Champions League.
Concurrently, however, the Portuguese star faces a battle of his own – a race to prove his worth and demand another season in Catalonia.
So far, Felix has been impressive on loan but his inconsistency is the one factor the administration holds against him.
Proving his point
As revealed in a report via AS, the youngster is knocking on the doors of Joan Laporta hoping to secure a future in Catalonia. His recent performance against Cadiz went a long way in making an impression on that front.
Felix was Barcelona’s best-attacking player last night, often creating a threat in the final third with his tricky dribbles and runs between the lines.
In 85 minutes on the night, he recorded one shot on target, two off target, one key pass and a successful dribble. His most important contribution, undoubtedly, was his overhead kick off Marcos Alonso’s corner to gift his team three points.
Joao Felix is making a strong case to win back his place in Xavi’s first-choice XI. That, however, is complicated given Lamine Yamal and Raphinha’s fine form on the two wings.
Joan Laporta has openly come out to reveal that the club are working to renew Felix this summer, and the player has been vocal about his desire to continue as well. The obstacle, however, is Atletico Madrid’s refusal to extend the loan and their high asking price.
Best ever season
While Felix’s season has indeed been marred by inconsistency and sees him primarily operating only as a substitute, it is his best-ever season in terms of goal contributions.
His best season before this came with Atletico Madrid in 2020-21 when he was involved in 16 goals for Los Rojiblancos. This season, his G+A tally has gone to 18, and it is clear that he is having an impact on the team’s good run of form.
Felix has currently scored ten goals for Barcelona this season, seven of which have come in La Liga. Further, he has eight assists to his name as it stands.
