In a major development, Javi Miguel of AS reports that Barcelona midfield gem Gavi is likely to miss the start of the 2024/25 season as he continues his recovery from injury.

The La Masia graduate suffered an ACL rupture back in November 2023 while playing for Spain in an international friendly.

Following surgery, it was anticipated that Gavi would be out for around seven to nine months, meaning the season was over for him while he was also expected to be out of the European Championships.

However, there was hope that he could return in time for pre-season and get ready for the start of the new campaign.

Recovery going slowly

However, as per the aforementioned report, Gavi’s recovery is going slower than anticipated and right now, he is at 50%, i.e., at the halfway point in his recovery.

The young midfield prodigy still has a long way to go to be at his 100%, at which point he would be ready to make a comeback.

Gavi suffered a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and an associated injury to the lateral meniscus.

The club have made it very clear that an ACL rupture takes between seven and nine months to fully recover from, but when the meniscus rupture is also thrown into the picture, two or three months more must be added.

As such, the best-case scenario is that Gavi is looking at eleven or twelve months on the sidelines, of which he has completed six months now.

Hence, Barcelona believe that Gavi will miss the start of the new season and could only make a comeback either in October or November.

Furthermore, The club is also very clear that once he is discharged, there will still be a process of almost a month for him to return to full fitness, having spent a year away from the field of play.

Thus, the great challenge for the club’s medical services is to ensure that the team can count on a fully fit Gavi from January 2025.
