Barcelona have recently made a crucial step towards preserving the core of this current unit in the years to come, by extending the contract of Pau Cubarsi.

The Spaniard, who has become one of the best defensive talents in the world, has agreed to renew his contract until 2027.

Cubarsi’s contract extension could go a long way in helping Barcelona secure the defender’s future, especially with the addition of a hefty €500 million release clause.

Barcelona’s pact with Cubarsi

Barcelona’s retention plans for Cubarsi do not only end with the recent contract extension.

According to Alex Pintanel, the Catalans have secured a pact with Cubarsi that will allow the club to extend the defender’s contract for two more years, once he turns 18.

This falls in line with Barça’s initial plans to reward Cubarsi with a five-year contract. However, since the defender is still a minor, Barcelona were not in a position to hand him a contract longer than three years.

As a result, Barcelona were only able to renew Cubarsi’s contract until 2027. But it appears the club have a foolproof plan of extending Cubarsi’s contract further once he turns of age.

What about the release clause?

Cubarsi’s current release clause stands at €500 million, which is half of what Barcelona usually offer for their star talents.

However, even here, Barça will explore the option of increasing Cubarsi’s release clause to €1 billion once the defender turns 18.

This will place Cubarsi in the same bracket as Alejandro Balde, Ronald Araujo, Pedri and Gavi, all of whom have a €1 billion release clause embedded in their respective contracts.
