Barcelona whizkid Lamine Yamal, who recently received a standing ovation from the fans at Santiago Bernabeu after his stunning performance against Brazil, is sending waves across the footballing world.
After bursting into the first team fold, the 16-year-old has caught the attention of several European heavyweights, but a report from Mundo Deportivo mentions that Barcelona are calm about his future.
As per the report, Barcelona continue to enjoy a sense of tranquillity despite Yamal’s recent explosion with both the club and the national team.
How can Barcelona be calm?
This is because an agreement with his agent, Jorge Mendes has been struck to extend his contract for five years, starting when he turns 18 and lasting until 2030. The contract will include a hefty penalty clause of €1 billion.
The calmness within Barcelona is attributed to Yamal’s recent contract signing, which extends until 2026, something that he signed last October.
It is to be noted that the young forward’s previous contract ended in 2024 but Mendes assured Barcelona of his continued commitment. Despite interest from various clubs, the Portuguese superagent facilitated the agreement.
Club president Joan Laporta has even secured a future deal with Mendes for when Yamal reaches 18, ensuring another five-year contract until 2030.
Relationships matter
The strong rapport between Mendes and Laporta underpins confidence in the pending agreement, despite it not yet being formalized.
Yamal’s situation at Barcelona is built on a strategic long-term vision, with discussions already underway for a seven-year commitment between the club, player, and agent.
Meanwhile, it is understood that while Yamal’s contract safeguards him from potential poaching by other clubs, Paris Saint-Germain have expressed interest.
Good thing for Barcelona, though, that Yamal’s deep integration into Barcelona and his determination to thrive as a member of the team offer reassurance amidst external attention.
