2024 was a challenging year for several Barcelona players, as the club’s collective struggles prevented them from contending for any silverware. The year was particularly tough for Frenkie de Jong, who faced continuous injury setbacks.

While some Blaugrana players managed to recover their morale with dominant displays in the Euros and Copa America, de Jong was unable to share in that success.

Indeed, his persistent injury woes kept him out of the Netherlands squad, denying him the opportunity to participate in a major tournament with his national team.

Frenkie’s return is in sight

After suffering a grade two sprain against Real Madrid in April this year, which was only supposed to keep him out for five to six weeks, it appears the Dutchman’s return is finally in sight.

According to AS, Frenkie de Jong will undergo a test on Wednesday to assess the condition of his ankle and confirm the midfielder’s feeling that he is fully recovered.

Barring any surprises, he is expected to rejoin the group in the coming days.

This news comes at a timely moment, as he would potentially be able to participate in the pre-season under Hansi Flick’s guidance, something the player is eager to do.

De Jong’s right ankle has given him a lot of headaches this past season, with the midfielder having suffered three injuries in the same area during 2023/24.

“The truth is that he has been very unlucky,” those inside the dressing room say.

In any case, Barcelona categorically deny that it is a chronic injury in the affected area unlike some reports suggested.

In fact, De Jong will undergo a special test on Wednesday to assess the real state of his ankle. Pending the results, the feeling the midfielder is giving off is that he is now fully recovered and ready for pre-season training with the rest of his teammates.
