Sunday night was a bitter pill to swallow for Barcelona as they lost 3-2 to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in a controversial manner thanks to a few key dodgy decisions by the match official.

What piled on the defeat was the injury to key midfielder Frenkie de Jong. On the cusp of half-time, the Dutchman jarred his ankle while going in for a 50-50 challenge against Federico Valverde.

Having gone to the ground immediately, Frenkie de Jong had to be stretchered off the pitch with the midfielder almost in tears.

De Jong’s season might be over

The first signs of the injury did not look good and it is now suspected that De Jong might have played his last game of the season.

Indeed, sources have informed Barça Universal that De Jong’s season may well have been over following his latest ankle injury.

It must be remembered that Frenkie had been sidelined with an ankle injury in March and had spent over a month on the sidelines.

While he will undergo tests and scans later today, sources suggest that the midfielder could be looking at at least one month out of action, by which time the season would be in the final gameweek.

As such, the appearance at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday may very well have been the final one for De Jong for this season.

And with there being rumours about a potential departure in the summer, only time will tell if it ends up being his final one overall in the Barcelona colours.
