Barcelona have long been on the hunt for a new central midfielder, ideally one who can operate in the pivot position.
After the departure of Sergio Busquets, the club have failed to find an ideal replacement in the number six position. Oriol Romeu was roped in from Girona, but the former La Masia starlet has struggled to perform upon his return to Barcelona.
Frenkie de Jong and Ilkay Gundogan, meanwhile, are more suited to an offensive role, whereas Pedri and Gavi have struggled with injuries.
This has led Barcelona to hunt for a new defensive midfield ahead of the coming summer. To that end, a recent report from Mundo Deportivo has highlighted two potential targets for the Catalans.
Amadou Onana
Given Barcelona’s economic turmoil, it is clear that the club must look past their main targets in Joshua Kimmich and Rodri. And that is where Amadou Onana comes into the fray.
MD reports that Barcelona ideating the possibility of signing the Everton starlet this summer, as part of their plans to shore up their midfield department.
Formerly of LOSC Lille, Onana has found success in the Premier League, having become a key element in the Everton setup.
With Everton flirting with relegation this season, Onana’s days at Goodison Park could be numbered. Barcelona are keeping close tabs on the midfielder, but are likely to face stiff competition from Chelsea.
Dion Lopy
Another alternative for Barcelona in the midfield department is Dion Lopy. The Senegalese international currently plies his trade for UD Almeria.
Since joining the Spanish club last summer, Lopy has enjoyed immense success in La Liga. He has impressed the onlookers with his strong presence in the middle of the park.
Standing at 1.84m, Lopy also has the physique that can always add something more to the Barcelona midfield unit.
As per MD, Lopy has a release clause worth €40 million, but he could be available for a lower fee in the coming summer.
