Barcelona ‘in control’ of 30-year-old La Liga signing on a free transfer

Barcelona have made it their priority to pursue a holding midfielder this summer after evidently failing to replace Sergio Busquets with Oriol Romeu this season.

The Spaniard was brought in as a stop-gap replacement, but has not even lived up to the admittedly low expectations set on him.

Unfortunately for Barcelona, their finances will not allow them to chase someone like Martin Zubimendi or Joshua Kimmich, which seem to be Xavi’s big dreams for that position.

Instead, Barça are looking for alternatives who can fill in the gap in the short-term without making a dent in their wallet for now.

And they have come across one within La Liga, in the form of Real Betis’ Guido Rodriguez, who is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

Under control

Barcelona have already sent in an offer to Guido, who is free to negotiate with any club now that he is expected to leave on a Bosman deal at the end of the season. The deal is very advanced.

And according to a report published by Fabrizio Romano, Barça have the transfer ‘under control’.

Barcelona and Guido have already reached an initial, verbal agreement over the move, with Betis now not expected to interfere in any way. However, nothing has been signed or guaranteed yet, as key details are still left to be finalised.

The likely contract will be for two years, with the option to extend for another season unilaterally.

Guido seems ready to leave Betis by the end of this season regardless of Barcelona’s offer, and had sent in a hint earlier this week during an interview, saying:

“You have to make decisions in life and well, we’ll see what happens at the end of the season. The truth is that as of today, neither I nor the club have any certainty about what might happen.”

Barcelona could try to wrap up the signing before the summer transfer window opens, and announce it as soon as possible so they can work on his registration.
