Pau Cubarsi’s inclusion was the major highlight when Spain coach Luis de la Fuente announced the squad for the upcoming friendlies.

Following a series of exceptional performances, in both La Liga and the Champions League, the Barcelona young defender was gifted with a maiden call-up to the Spanish national team.

Everything suggests Cubarsi will make his national team debut over the coming weeks as well, as Spain take on Colombia and Brazil in the upcoming international break.

A potential berth in the Euro 2024?

Cubarsi’s role in the Spanish national team transcends far beyond the upcoming friendlies. In fact, there is a feeling the youngster could be in contention for a berth in the Euro 2024 squad, to be played later this summer.

The youngster’s brilliant form at the highest level of performance has made him one of the best defensive prospects in world football right now.

Spain are well aware of Cubarsi’s talents. That is why La Roja might also be keen on utilising his services not only for the upcoming Euro 2024, but also for the summer Olympics.

Barcelona worried about Cubarsi’s fitness

According to Mundo Deportivo, though, Barcelona are worried about Cubarsi’s potential participation in both Euro 2024 and Olympics this summer.

If Cubarsi has to play in both the Euros and the Olympic Games, it would mean that from the end of the season with Barça until the beginning of August, he will be active and will have no break before the start of the new campaign.

Spain had pulled off a similar stunt in 2021 when Pedri was selected for both competitions. He ended up picking up an injury, thereby kickstarting his relationship with the infirmary.

Barcelona are worried the same might happen to Cubarsi, who is still in the early stages of his career and needs to work more on his fitness before he is able to play consistently at the bigger.

That is why Barça are now involved in tense talks with RFEF and it won’t be surprising to see the two entities being involved in a long discussion over Cubarsi’s summer ahead.
