In a concerning update, Toni Juanmarti of SPORT reports that Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo is still at risk of undergoing surgery after injuring himself earlier this month.

In the scenario that the defender is forced to be operated upon, he could be out for a period of four months, which will be a devastating blow for the player and the club as well.

What happened?

A week ago, when Uruguay were playing Brazil in the quarterfinals of the Copa America, Araujo felt a ‘prick’ in the back of his thigh 30 minutes into the game and had to be taken off.

While there has been a lack of clear update from the Uruguayan national team, it has been initially expected that Araujo could be sidelined for two months.

Araujo’s injury is understood to be at a very delicate point and that means that the option of surgery must be considered.

It remains to be seen what the final decision will be, as it will depend on further tests in Barcelona, where he arrived today, to find out for sure.

Araujo already at Ciutat Esportiva

A report from Jijantes FC confirms that Araujo is already in Barcelona and has arrived at the club’s Ciutat Esportiva facilities where he will be subjected to medical tests.

If the results indicate that conservative treatment may not be enough to completely address the injury, then surgery would be the preferred option, as a relapse would be avoided at all costs, SPORT states.

If the decision is finally made to have surgery, Ronald will almost certainly be out for more than four months, a serious blow for the Uruguayan centre-back.

Until such a time comes, both the player’s entourage and the club prefer to remain silent without anticipating hypothetical scenarios while waiting for conclusive medical tests to be carried out.
